Bountiful Brook Bellbirds

Project:

Bellbird Activity The native forest of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary is favoured by bellbirds. This will be evident to anyone who has listened to their calls ringing down the valley. To measure bird activity, monitors take note of all birds seen and heard during a 5 minute interval at each of 20 sites situated 200m apart and extending the length of the sanctuary. Monitoring began in January, 2009 at the first 10 sites. The positions of the next 10 were established in time for monitoring in May 2009. Initially, sites 11-20 lay outside the area being trapped while sites 1-10 were within it. In October 2009, in response to increased pest numbers following heavy seeding of beech trees, trapping was extended to just beyond site 14.
