For the first time in over 100 years, the little spotted kiwi is returning to the South Island — and you could be one of the lucky few who get to open a box and help release one of the kiwi into its new home at Brook Waimārama Sanctuary. 📅 Key Dates

Entrants and their whanua must be available at 4-8pm on Friday 9th May (winners can bring up to 2 adults with them)
Entries open: Wednesday 9th April 2025
Entries close: Wednesday 30th April 2025 at 11.59pm
Winner announced: 1st May

Phone numbers and email addresses are collected in order to contact the winners

Winners must respond to email or phone prize winner confirmation within 48 hours in order to claim or risk forfeiting their prize. Winners must also be aged 8-18 to enter. This is due to the evening release time in the dark in the Sanctuary and the need for careful and slow release of the kiwi.

Competition Terms and Conditions

1. Competition Overview

This giveaway is organized by Brook Waimārama Sanctuary to celebrate the historic return of little spotted kiwi to the South Island for the first time in over 100 years. Participants have the chance to win an exclusive experience: releasing a kiwi into the sanctuary, plus bonus prizes.

2. Eligibility

Open to residents of Nelson and the surrounding area only.
Participants must be aged 8-18 years at the time of entry.
Employees of Brook Waimārama Sanctuary and their immediate family members are not eligible to enter.

3. How to Enter

To enter the competition, participants must: Visit the official competition landing page – https://www.brooksanctuary.org.nz/bringing-kiwi-home/kids-kiwi-release-competition
Submit the online entry form with required contact details.
(Optional) Follow @BrookSanctuary on Instagram, tag the account in a post or story, and use the designated competition hashtag to help spread awareness.

4. Competition Period

The competition opens on 9 April 2025 and closes on 30 April 2025 at 11.59 pm.
Entries received after the closing date will not be eligible.

5. Winner Selection & Notification

Two winners will be selected randomly from all valid entries submitted via the landing page form.
The winner will be contacted using the contact details provided in the form and must respond within 48 hours to confirm acceptance.
If the selected winner does not respond in time, a new winner will be drawn.

6. Prizes

Two (2) winners will receive the opportunity to participate in the official release of a little spotted kiwi into the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary on 9th May from 4-8 pm. Each winner is allowed to bring up to 2 adults with them (no siblings or other family allowed). Winners must be available at this time on 9th May 2025.
Additional prizes include a Brook Sanctuary t-shirt and a kiwi plush toy.
Prizes are non-transferable and cannot be exchanged for cash.

7. Data Privacy & Use of Entries

By entering, participants (and their legal guardians) consent to the collection and use of personal data for competition administration and future updates from Brook Waimārama Sanctuary
Brook Waimārama Sanctuary will store data securely and not share it with third parties.

8. Publicity & Social Media Disclaimer

By participating, entrants grant Brook Waimārama Sanctuary the right to use names for promotion.
Selected participants will be asked for permission to use their photo or content in promotional material.

9. General Conditions

Brook Waimārama Sanctuary reserves the right to verify eligibility and disqualify incomplete or ineligible entries.
The sanctuary reserves the right to amend, suspend, or cancel the competition if required due to unforeseen circumstances.
